Application for the examination
Applicants who wishes to take the exam has to submit an application for the examination to the Patent Office by March 1st (for exam in May) and by September 1st (for exam in November) by indicating the specialization in which they wish to take the exam. In order to prove that the applicant, at the time when he submits an application for the examination, meets the requirements of the law, the applicant has to indicate in the submission the citizenship, as well as state language proficiency and knowledge of foreign languages, as well as the following: 1. a copy of the document certifying the state language skills at the highest level in accordance with the requirements of the State Language Law (if the general education program is not acquired in the Latvian language); 2. a copy of the academic or second-level higher vocational education diploma (the diploma awarded by a foreign higher education institution in the specialty must be recognized in accordance with the procedure specified in the Education Law); 3. a document that describes work experience in the area of industrial property protection in detail. -
Qualification examination commission’s decision on the permission to take the exam
Qualification examination commission within 10 working days reviews the application for examination and within three working days informs the candidate about the decision to let him or her take the exam by sending a written notice electronically or at the address indicated by the candidate. Secretary of the commission no later than 10 working days before the exam informs the applicant about the place and time of the examination by sending a written notice and an invitation to pay the exam fee. The fee for the examination is paid in accordance with the fee service price list of the Patent Office. The costs for taking a Professional Patent attorney qualification exam in one specialization is EUR 77.64 (seventy-seven euros and 64 cents). -
Exam
The examination takes place in two modules, namely, the written module (causus) in each specialty indicated by the applicant in the submission and the speaking module of the applicant's theoretical knowledge - three theoretical questions in the examination paper in each specialty indicated by the applicant in the submission. Each module of the exam is scheduled on a separate day. At least four members of the Qualification Examination commission of the Professional Patent Attorney, including the chairperson of the commission, participates in the examination of the applicant. When attending an examination, the Applicant presents to the Secretary of the Commission a personal identification document indicating the citizenship and a document as a proof of payment. -
Announcement of the exam results
Qualification examination commission informs the candidate about evaluation of the exam on the next business day following the decision and within three working days sends the decision on the results of the examination electronically or at the address indicated by the candidate. If the applicant has passed the exam, an extract from the decision will be accompanied by an invitation to submit an application to the Patent Office within two months that requests an inclusion of the information on the Professional Patent attorney list.
