On conclusion of the third quarter of the year, the Latvian Patent Office has selected the next eight candidates for the main award of the Trademark of the Year 2024 competition. During the next week,  we will introduce a series of publications about the companies – owners of creative, expressive and witty trademarks, candidates for the main award of the competition selected in various nominations.

To be in motion and preserve the Latgalian cultural space -  the LgSC association

Latgale, which is known as the “Land of Blue Lakes”, is the only place in the world where people speak the Latgalian language on a daily basis, and some of them have formed an association with the aim of preserving and developing the cultural space of Latgale and the Latgalian language. The LgSC association, formerly known as Latgolys Studentu centrs (Latgalian Student Centre),  was officially founded in 2005.

The society’s 20th anniversary approaching, the association's activists have concluded that changes are needed, i.e. a new identity. “As a result of brainstorming, the idea of the Latgalian cultural movement “Volūda” was born, showing that the Latgalian language is the main activity of the association, permeating all the association’s activities and works. The graphic element “wave”  of the Volūda sign symbolizes Latgale, the land of lakes and the place where the association started its activities, the right spelling, as the knowledge of the Latgalian language is the strong point of the association, and movement, progress, showing the nature of the organization - to be active, to create and promote new initiatives and works for the development and diversification of the Latgalian cultural space," says Edeite Laime, Chairperson of the LgSC board.

The association maintains the only media in the world which is entirely in Latgalian - the Latgalian culture news portal lakuga.lv -, teaches Latgalian language, publishes books, participates in the creation of Latgalian radio productions, organizes literary contests,  seminars, discussions and other events for children, young people and adults in Latgale and elsewhere in Latvia. Also, the Latvian folk group “Ceidari” operates in Riga under the auspices of the association.
