Celebrating the World Intellectual Property Day the winners of a video competition “The Journey into the Industrial Property World” were awarded and for the first time the World Intellectual Property Organizations (WIPO) Schoolchildren`s Trophy was presented. 1st year students from Ogre Technical College received the trophy for their video “Mine Is Mine and Only mine”.
To promote pupils' understanding of the importance of industrial property, its use in business, as well as to develop their creativity and curiosity, the Latvian Patent Office, in cooperation with the Association of Professional Patent Attorneys of Latvia (LPPA), the Latvian National Group of International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI LNG) and Junior Achievement Latvia (JA Latvia), organized a video competition “The Journey into the Industrial Property World”, for which 27 videos from 20 Latvian schools were submitted.
In the competition, pupils had to create a video that calls for respect and protection of intellectual property rights. Among the participants, students from classes 5-11 have demonstrated their creativity, inventive and professional approaches. They have focused on issues such as respect for copyright and combating counterfeiting, highlighting the importance of registering trademarks and designs and acquiring patents in modern commercial activities. The stories from school companies' experience on the way to protecting intellectual property were also shown as well as the lessons learned by the student companies who have protected their intellectual property.
Minister for Justice Jānis Bordāns noted that the video contest had encouraged pupils to be creative and learn about intellectual property topics and their practical application. “I am convinced that the pupils have raised their awareness of the rights of authors, designers, inventors and entrepreneurs to their work, and this will be useful in future practical business activities,” said Minister for Justice.
The winners of the competition and the seven most successful videos were announced at the award ceremony. The videos of the competition was assessed by a competent jury – Brigita Tērauda, a LPPA representative; Jevgeņija Gainutdinova, a AIPPI LNG representative; Chairman of the JA Latvia board Jānis Krievāns, Dace Liberte, Chairman of the Board of the Industrial Property Board of Appeal and Elīna Sniedze, a representative of the Patent Office. The representatives of the competition panel unanimously agreed that all the contestants would deserve awards for creative approaches in such a complex area.
The Patent Office’s Director Sandris Laganovskis emphasizes: “We are pleased and pleasantly surprised by the activity of students and teachers, finding time and inspiration to create attractive videos. Getting to know the video authors shows that pupils are active and purposeful in various activities, therefore success follows. We wish both teachers and pupils to be creative and to protect their intellectual property!”
After careful consideration of all the works of the competition, the jury commission acknowledged the video “Mine Is Mine and Only Mine” by Agate Daina Briņece, Anastasija Ņeņišina and Katrīne Kate Kucina (1st year students from Ogre Technical College) as the winner. The authors urge to remember the need for intellectual property protection in the age of abundance of modern ideas and to act responsibly against others.

The second place was awarded to 5th grade pupils Vilis Civkašs and Ernests Ēvers from Riga English Grammar School for a creative video “Counterfeiting of Designs”. The pupils attractively illustrate the story of infringing the registered kendama design.

The third place was awarded to 6th grade pupils Antons Joničenoks, Aleksandrs Tihenko and Antons Gaņins from Riga Secondary School No 34. Their video shows the need for copyright protection. The idea of the animated film created by the pupils is to invite both children and adults to pay attention to copyright infringement and not to support abusive copying and piracy.

Promotional awards were given to four videos, each focusing on different topics in an attractive way:

The winners and their teachers received attractive prizes, and all the seven teams will go on a joint trip to AHHAA Science Center in Tartu, Estonia. The videos produced by the laureates will be published on social networks and used for future youth events.
